Spiral Weaving
when i first learned spiral weaving in january i didn’t realise the spool of remembrance, connectivity & community that was to unravel as we gather to weave, to sing
to honour the plants and our ancestors who gathered in this same way since the beginning of time
the spiral we are weaving transcends all categorisation of prayer form, skin tone & birthplace
as everywhere and everyone’s ancestors knew these ways
weaving prayers and working out mental turbulence through each folded fiber
carrying forth the ways of those who wove as a way of life
vessels of resourcefulness, tradition, beauty & creativity weaving vessels to gather the fruit that’s traversed the miraculous journey from seed, to flower, to fruit and again, unceasingly
the walnuts & olives that’ve just dropped from the shaken tree branch
the oranges & figs awaiting appreciation of their heavenly succulence
in the spirals of the weaving we remember nature isn’t a commodity, but the master teacher of life
the earth herself who provides nothing void of useful potential and without flaw
great teacher of listening
carrying the whispers of the ancients through the hanging palm branches who dance in the winds of change & regeneration
the sacred spiral technique was taught to me just as my decolonisation advocacy was on it’s fall out of integrity, triggered by the trauma in my own bloodline
& i now realise these threads, woven in exactly this way, have come into my hands from Palestine
i gather, split, sort & weave and realise the meditation of crafting is not just a decompressive hobby
but an altar of resurrection of all that’s been overlooked
asking us to spiral back without getting caught in the loop
for they are vastly different shapes and travel forms
one is ruled by the mind and is enslaving
while the other symbolises the cultivation of consciousness and liberates
i choose the journey of the eternal spiral & bow in reverence to all the ancestors of the earth who cherished the symbiotic union of life
